How to type faster: 10 typing practice tips
Typing fast is not about moving your fingers frantically – it is about accurate, relaxed and rhythmic keystrokes. These ten tips are what actually move the needle, from 30 WPM beginners to 80+ WPM typists. Each one comes with a way to practise it in the free Truck Typing Game, where your typing speed literally drives a military truck.
1. Learn the home row and touch type
Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;, with your thumbs on the space bar. The small bumps on F and J let you find the position without looking. Every finger owns a column of keys. Touch typing feels slow for the first week, but it is the only way past roughly 50 WPM.
2. Stop looking at the keyboard
Every glance down breaks your reading flow. Keep your eyes on the text. In Truck Typing Game the current word sits in the centre of the screen and is painted on the road, so your eyes never need to leave the action.
3. Accuracy before speed
Aim for 97% accuracy or better. A mistake costs the wrong key, the correction and the lost rhythm. In the game a wrong key misfires the engine and the truck loses power for half a second, so you feel the cost of every error.
4. Type in a steady rhythm
Even, metronome-like keystrokes are faster than bursts and pauses. In the game the truck stops when you stop and speeds up as your rhythm settles, which makes rhythm easy to feel.
5. Read one word ahead
Good typists read the next word while their fingers finish the current one. The upcoming words wait on the right of the typing line – train yourself to glance at them before you press space.
6. Sit well and relax your hands
Sit upright with your feet flat, elbows at about 90° and wrists floating just above the keyboard. Tension slows your fingers down and causes errors. Shake out your hands between races.
7. Practise little and often
Fifteen to twenty focused minutes a day beat a two-hour session once a week. One race in the game takes about two to four minutes – three races make a perfect daily warm-up.
8. Train the hard keys
Capitals, numbers and punctuation are where most typists slow down. Switch the game to Hard difficulty to practise sentences with capitals, commas, colons, quotes and numbers – the same mix you meet in exams and office documents.
9. Measure your progress
Track your WPM and accuracy over time. Every race ends with your average WPM, accuracy and best streak, and your best time per map is saved. For a classic timed test, use the TypeMaster Pro typing speed test.
10. Make it fun so you keep going
The biggest factor in typing speed is how long you keep practising. Games keep motivation high: try different maps, weather and difficulty in Truck Typing Game, or explore 54 more typing games.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type 35–45 WPM. 60 WPM is comfortable for office work, 75+ WPM is professional level and competitive typists exceed 100 WPM.
How long does it take to type faster?
With 15–20 minutes of focused practice a day, most learners gain 10–20 WPM in four to six weeks. Switching to touch typing can feel slower for the first week before speed climbs.
Are typing games good practice?
Yes, when they reward accuracy. Games keep you practising longer; Truck Typing Game slows the truck after every mistake, so it trains accurate, steady typing rather than random mashing.
